Prominent klimaatwetenschapper: ‘Te laat om klimaatverandering tegen te houden’
AMSTERDAM – Het idee dat de temperatuurstijging nog onder de 2 graden Celsius kan worden gehouden kan overboord worden gegooid.
Dit verklaart Bob Watson, prominent wetenschappelijk adviseur voor de Britse overheid, zo melden Britse media.
Watson verwacht dat de temperatuur zelfs nog verder zal stijgen tot een toename van 5 graden Celsius. De gevolgen daarvan zijn niet te overzien.
Watson is een van de meest prominente wetenschappers op het gebied van klimaatverandering. Hij is onder andere oud-voorzitter van de Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) van de VN.
Serieuzen gevolgen
“Als we zo doorgaan is er een 50/50 procent kans dat we een temperatuurstijging bereiken van 3 graden”, aldus Watson tegenover de BBC. “Ik zou een toename van 5 graden niet uitsluiten en dat zou erg serieuze gevolgen hebben voor de mensen in de wereld.”
“Als ik terugkijk naar klimaattoppen in Kopenhagen, Cancún en Durban dan ben ik niet al te optimistisch.” Volgens Watson is er geen revolutie nodig om de huidige technologie te vervangen voor schone energietechnologie.
Politieke wil
Grootste probleem is de politieke wil van landen. Watson vindt dat de overheden van Duitsland en Groot-Brittannië leidersrollen op zich moeten nemen om CO2-uitstoot tegen te gaan.
De drempel van een stijging van 2 graden Celsius is afgesproken in 2010 bij een klimaattop van de Verenigde Naties. Onlangs bracht het Internationaal Energieagentschap (IEA) nog een rapport uit waarin werd geconcludeerd dat de aarde de grens van 2 graden op termijn gaat halen.
